Windows Phone 7 : Designing

Image
Microsoft’s new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7 (WP7), introduces a fresh approach to content organization and a different UX, based on the Metro design language and principles that will be incorporated into Windows 8. It also targets a different market than its predecessor: instead of being designed mainly for business and technology workers, WP7 is targeted at active people with a busy life, both offline and online, and who use social networks every day, whatever their background. Why Should Designers Care? First, it’s a new interface, so you have space to create and develop some new ideas for it. We are still at the beginning of its growing curve, so it’s an interesting challenge. When I saw a WP7 presentation for the first time, I thought, “I want to design something for this.” Exploring is a great way to learn how to build a new exciting experience for users. Secondly, Metro design is a market reality that we can’t ignore. This is a new user experience t

Introduction to HTML 5

Image
Welcome to HTML5 . [ Editor's note : Have you already got your copy of the Smashing Book #2 ? The book shares valuable practical insight into design, usability and coding. Have a look at the contents .] What are the basics? The DOCTYPE When I first started researching HTML5 a few months ago, one of the main things I struggled to find was the doctype. A simple thing, you’d think it would be everywhere, but after much frustration, I finally found it buried within w3.org and here it is: 1 <!DOCTYPE html> I was also curious why they chose to “html” rather than “html5″, it seemed like the logical way to tell a browser that the current document was written in HTML5, and offered a good template for the future. But I found that <!DOCTYPE html5> triggers Quirks Mode in IE6, and when taking backwards compatibility into consideration <!DOCTYPE html> is a pretty good choice (in my opinion). Overall, I really like the new

Shoppers show off their newly-bought PS Vita consoles in Tokyo. Photograph: AP Sony has ended one of its worst-ever years on a high note, with the launch of its cutting-edge handheld console, the PlayStation Vita, in Japan. Several Tokyo shops opened at 7am on Saturday to mark the PS Vita's debut, although attention was focused on the Tsutaya store in the trendy shopping district of Shibuya, where the machine's first official customer was presented with his purchase by the world's most high-powered shop assistants, Kaz Hirai and Andrew House – the former is executive deputy president of Sony and chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, its video games wing, while House is president and CEO of SCE. The PS Vita was certainly well received in Tokyo: Kensho Monden, one of the first people to buy it, said: "I think its screen, in particular, is very good. I've bought Ridge Racer, and I bought the 3G version [the base model is Wi-Fi enabled only, but

How to make app on iPhone !!

Image
iShoot: written in six weeks. Mostly while holding a baby... You've probably heard all about iShoot. Written by a programmer at Sun Microsystems in his spare time, this Worms-style artillery shooter blasted to the top of the App Store charts earlier this year and stayed there for weeks earning its creator enough money to pack in his day job and become a professional developer. You may also have seen the news this week about nine-year-old programming prodigy Lim Ding Wen who has developed his own simple painting app for the iPhone. Doodle Kids is doing reasonable business, attracting 4,000 downloads in less than a fortnight and gaining its author international news coverage. There's no question about it, iPhone has become the people's platform. While the PC maintains a healthy indie development scene, Apple's handset, with its low barriers to entry and seamless consumer purchasing system, is the real rags-to-riches machine. In practically

Dell Windows 7 Tablet Coming "Later This Year"

Image
The Windows 7 tablet scene is about to get a big boost from a big player. Dell just announced a whole series of new business computers and notebooks — generally stuff we pass over — but one little paragraph made the whole thing worth reading. It teases nothing less that 10-inch Windows 7 tablet aimed right at businesses. HP Slate? You’ve got some competition. Just like its HP counterpart though, this model seems destined for the enterprise market meaning it likely won’t end up at Best Buy. It’s pretty clear that major computer makers have zero interest in releasing a consumer-oriented Windows 7 slate device even though it’s clear there’s a market for such a thing. Additionally, Dell plans to extend its existing tablet portfolio with a 10-inch, Windows 7-based business-ready tablet later this year. The upcoming tablet is designed for end-users who need greater mobility, as well as IT organizations that demand control, security, manageability and integration w
