emPower eyeglasses use accelerometer and LCD layer for electronic focusing

By:   Matthew Humphries In you wear eyeglasses then you know they can’t be perfect in all situations. You have a prescription that solves a problem such as long or short sightedness, but you still find yourself looking over the top of the glasses or having trouble focusing through them for certain viewing tasks. PixelOptics has turned to technology in order to solve that problem, and claim to have produced some rather intelligent eyewear that automatically adjusts the prescription based on what you are trying to look at. The new glasses are called emPower. They use a combination of a micro-accelerometer, chip, and small rechargeable battery embedded into the frame of the glasses. That setup controls an LCD layer which covers both lenses. The accelerometer is used to tell when the wearer tilts their head forwards or backwards, and if in automatic mode, will adjust the lens output to suit. Tilting the head forwards suggests trying to read something so the lower reading

Veteran games industry news site MCV says the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony will definitely be shown at E3 2012 in June. The manufacturers don't seem so sure, though The Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles: what will the next versions look like? The next generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles will be unveiled at this year's E3 exhibition in June, industry news source MCV has reported. There have been rumours for months that a successor to the Xbox 360 would premiere at the Los Angeles event, but this is the first reliable indication that Sony is already preparing its own generational leap. The editor-in-chief of MCV, Michael French, told the Guardian that the information had come from a highly trusted source. "A lot of people have suspected that Microsoft would show something," he said. "And what Sony has realised is that launching PS3 so long after the Xbox 360 meant that they were on the backfoot. Sony Tablet P review

Image
Most manufacturers seem to be gradually morphing their tablet offerings into one barely distinguishable design, but Sony continues to be different. After the wedge-shaped, media-focused Tablet S comes something more radical: the Sony Tablet P is a dual-screened Android tablet that folds up like the Nintendo DS’s older, smarter brother. It’s 22mm thick when closed and weighs 368g, with a curvy shape – Sony can genuinely claim to have a tablet that will fit in your pocket. The only blemishes on its edges are a power socket, micro-USB and headphone ports, and a volume rocker button. It works over 802.11n Wi-Fi and 3G (you get a SIM with a month of free data from 3 in the box), and has GPS too. The two 5.5in screens each boast a 1,024 x 480 resolution, so when opened flat they combine for a large, almost square display, closer to the 4 x 3 aspect ratio of an iPad than the usual widescreen Android tablets. Sony says the Tablet P’s TruBlack display will blow you away,

Shoppers show off their newly-bought PS Vita consoles in Tokyo. Photograph: AP Sony has ended one of its worst-ever years on a high note, with the launch of its cutting-edge handheld console, the PlayStation Vita, in Japan. Several Tokyo shops opened at 7am on Saturday to mark the PS Vita's debut, although attention was focused on the Tsutaya store in the trendy shopping district of Shibuya, where the machine's first official customer was presented with his purchase by the world's most high-powered shop assistants, Kaz Hirai and Andrew House – the former is executive deputy president of Sony and chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, its video games wing, while House is president and CEO of SCE. The PS Vita was certainly well received in Tokyo: Kensho Monden, one of the first people to buy it, said: "I think its screen, in particular, is very good.
